Diverse professionals communicating in a meeting

Your accent is part of who you are. It shows where you come from and what languages you speak. There is nothing wrong with having an accent.

But sometimes, your accent can make it hard for people to understand you. Maybe people at work ask you to say things again. Maybe you do not speak up in meetings because you worry people will not understand you. Maybe you feel like your accent is stopping you from getting ahead at work.

If this sounds like you, accent modification can help. A speech-language pathologist (SLP) — also called a speech therapist — is the right person to work with.

What Is Accent Modification?

Accent modification is a service that helps you speak English more clearly. You learn how to say certain sounds better, how to use the right rhythm and stress in English, and how to make your speech easier to understand.

It is also called accent reduction or accent coaching. But the goal is not to remove your accent. You do not need to sound like you were born in America. The goal is to help you communicate clearly when it matters — at work, on the phone, in job interviews, or in everyday life.

Think of it as learning a new skill. You keep your accent. You just learn to adjust when you want to.

Why Work With a Speech Therapist?

There are many accent coaches, apps, and videos online. So why see a speech therapist?

A speech therapist has special training in how sounds are made. We know how your tongue, lips, and mouth work together to make each sound. This means we can find exactly which sounds are hard for you and show you how to fix them.

  • We listen to you first. We look at how you speak now, find the sounds that are hardest for others to understand, and learn what your goals are.
  • We focus on what you need. You do not practice random exercises. You practice the exact sounds and words that matter most for your life and your job.
  • We use real situations. We practice things you actually do — like giving a presentation, talking on the phone, or introducing yourself. This way, you can use what you learn right away.
  • Our methods are proven. Speech therapists use techniques based on science and research. This is not guesswork.

Who Is This For?

Accent modification is for any adult who wants to be understood more easily in English. People who work with us include:

  • Working professionals — doctors, engineers, managers, salespeople, and anyone who talks to clients, leads meetings, or gives presentations
  • People who moved to the U.S. — and want to communicate better at work and in daily life
  • Students and researchers — who need to present, teach, or speak in class
  • Anyone who feels that their accent makes daily communication harder than it should be

Common Challenges by Language

Every language has different sounds. That is why speakers of different languages have different challenges with English. Here are some common examples:

  • Spanish speakers often find it hard to tell the difference between words like "ship" and "sheep," or "bit" and "beat." English has more vowel sounds than Spanish, and word stress patterns are different.
  • Mandarin and Cantonese speakers may have difficulty with ending consonants (like the "d" in "played" or the "s" in "books"), the R and L sounds, and the TH sound. English rhythm and stress also work very differently from Chinese tonal patterns.
  • Korean speakers often work on the R and L distinction, the F and P sounds, and vowel differences that do not exist in Korean.
  • Russian and Ukrainian speakers may find it hard to use the right vowel length and word stress in English. The TH sound and the W sound (which does not exist in Russian) are also common areas to work on.
  • Hindi and Urdu speakers often work on the W and V distinction, vowel sounds, and the rhythm and melody of English sentences.
  • Arabic speakers may have difficulty with P and B, vowel sounds that do not exist in Arabic, and English stress and intonation patterns.
  • Japanese speakers often work on the R and L distinction, consonant clusters (like "str" in "street"), and adding natural stress and rhythm to English sentences.
  • French speakers may work on the TH sound, the H sound (which is silent in French), word stress, and the difference between tense and relaxed vowels.
  • Portuguese and Brazilian Portuguese speakers often work on ending consonants, vowel differences, and the rhythm of English compared to Portuguese.

No matter what language you speak, we start by listening to you and finding the specific sounds and patterns that matter most for your goals.

What Happens in a Session?

Sessions are one-on-one with your speech therapist. Each session is 30 to 60 minutes. All sessions happen over video call — you do not need to travel anywhere. You can join from home or from your office.

Here is what you will work on:

  • Sounds. You learn how to say sounds that are different in English — like the American R, TH, or vowel sounds that do not exist in your first language.
  • Rhythm and stress. In English, some parts of a word or sentence are louder or longer than others. Learning these patterns makes your speech sound more natural.
  • Connecting words. English speakers blend words together when they talk. For example, "did you" often sounds like "didju." Learning these patterns helps your speech flow better.
  • Real practice. You practice real things from your life — introducing yourself, leading a meeting, ordering food, making phone calls. This helps you use your new skills every day.

How Long Does It Take?

Every person is different. Some people see changes in just a few sessions. Others work on their goals for several months. It depends on which sounds you are working on, how much you practice, and what your goals are.

Most people who practice regularly see real improvement. This is not about being perfect — it is about getting better, step by step.

It Is Not Just About Sounds — It Is About Confidence

When people understand you the first time, something changes. You speak up more. You stop worrying about being misunderstood. You stop letting other people talk for you.

Many of our clients say the biggest change was not just clearer speech. It was feeling like they finally had a voice at work and in their community.

Important: An Accent Is Not a Problem

Having an accent is not a disorder. It is not something that needs to be "fixed." Accent modification is a choice — you are choosing to learn a new skill, just like learning to write better emails or give better presentations.

Because it is a choice and not a medical treatment, accent modification is usually a private-pay service. Some employers will pay for it as professional development — it is worth asking your company.

Online Sessions Make It Easy

All of our accent modification sessions are online. You can join from anywhere in New York or New Jersey. No driving, no time off work. We also offer evening sessions to fit your schedule.

Research shows that online speech therapy can be as effective as in-person sessions for many people. For accent modification, video sessions work very well because you are already practicing communication in a real setting.
