If you or someone you love is working to get their words back -- after a stroke, a brain injury, or another health change -- speech therapy can make a real difference. But one question stops a lot of adults before they even start: "Will Medicare pay for this?"
The short answer is yes. Medicare does cover speech therapy, including sessions delivered online. Here's how it works, what you can expect to pay, and how to get started from home in New York or New Jersey.
Does Medicare Cover Speech Therapy?
Yes. Speech-language pathology is a covered benefit under Medicare Part B (your medical insurance). When speech therapy is medically necessary -- meaning it's reasonable and necessary to evaluate or treat your condition -- Medicare Part B helps pay for it.
We are an enrolled Medicare provider, which means we bill Medicare directly for covered services. You don't have to pay in full up front and chase down reimbursement later -- we handle the billing with Medicare for you.
Who Qualifies?
Medicare covers speech therapy when it's connected to a medical need. For adults, that often includes:
- Speech and language difficulties after a stroke (such as aphasia or slurred, effortful speech)
- Communication changes after a brain injury
- Speech changes related to neurological conditions, such as Parkinson's disease
- Cognitive-communication difficulties affecting memory, attention, or word-finding in everyday conversation
- Difficulty being understood because of unclear or slurred speech
Whether your specific situation is covered comes down to medical necessity. That's something we'll help you sort out before therapy begins -- you won't be left guessing.
What About Online Speech Therapy?
Here's the part that surprises people: Medicare has expanded coverage for telehealth, and speech-language pathologists can provide covered services by video. That means you can do your therapy from your own living room -- no driving, no waiting rooms, no arranging a ride.
For many adults recovering their communication skills, that convenience matters enormously. And research shows online speech therapy can be just as effective as in-person sessions. Telehealth coverage rules can change over time, so when you call, we'll confirm your current eligibility before we begin -- no surprises.
What Will It Cost You?
Under Medicare Part B, once you've met your annual Part B deductible, Medicare typically pays 80% of the approved amount for covered speech therapy, and you're responsible for the remaining 20% (called coinsurance).
If you have a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plan or other secondary insurance, it may cover some or all of that remaining 20%. Every plan is a little different, so we'll walk through what to expect for your specific situation on your first call.
How to Get Started
It's simpler than most people expect:
1. Call for a free consultation. We'll talk about what you're noticing and what you'd like to work on -- no commitment, no pressure.
2. We confirm your coverage. Medicare requires a plan of care for therapy services, and we coordinate the necessary documentation, including with your doctor when needed. We'll confirm your Medicare eligibility before anything begins.
3. We schedule your evaluation and begin. From there, you work with the same therapist every session, online, on a schedule that fits your life -- including evenings.
You Don't Have to Navigate This Alone
